Custom Instrument Profile: Brazilian Rosewood “Butterfly” Guitar

Custom Instrument Profile: Brazilian Rosewood “Butterfly” Guitar

Jul 23, 2014 | News & Events

The craftsmen at Breedlove just finished this really amazing custom CM acoustic guitar. This instrument is over the top! The tonewoods alone are newsworth, but the additional custom options are what make this instrument a truly over-the-top creation. Here's a look at the build components: Brazilian Rosewood Back and Sides: Brazilian rosewood is highly desirable, exceptionally rare and heavily regulated. It is regarded as one of the finest tonewoods; hard, stiff, and highly resonant with a glass-like ring that sustains; it has a floral scent, similar to roses, thus the name. A very hard, heavy wood that produces a loud, warm, rich tone, with full deep bases, and brilliant trebles, know for it’s sustain and clarity. Bearclaw Sitka Spruce Top: Bearclaw has a shallow, cross-grain curl that seems to increase cross-grain stiffness. Many luthiers feel that it enhances the tone and sustain of spruce. Strong, focused tone with strong fundamental — perfect for flatpicking styles. Usually takes a slightly longer period of playing time to...

From July 17, 2014 The Music Trades An exuberant, standing room only crowd filled the Davidson Ballroom on the eve of Summer NAMM to hear “Insights,” a wide ranging conversation between 20 time Grammy winner Vince Gill, also known as the “Honorary Mayor of Nashville,” and Tom Bedell CEO of the Bedell and Breedlove guitar companies. Last year, Gill and Bedell hosted a similar session with a panel of top industry executives. This year, the session was centered around Gill and his band, “The Players.” Introducing the group of top Nashville players, Bedell said, “We wanted to give you an idea of what players expect of their instruments and equipment, and how they think.” Recounting his experiences in working with music industry manufacturers, Gill got a laugh from the audience saying, “My daddy always asked me, ‘why is it when you didn’t have two nickels to rub together, no one would give you anything, and now that you have all the money you need, people are beating down your door...

Custom Instrument Profile: Custom Dandelion Tenor Ukulele

Jul 16, 2014 | News & Events

At Breedlove, our craftsmen create a wide variety of very unique, creative and impressive custom instruments. The handcrafted custom ukuleles, in particular, are both visual and sonically stunning. We just completed this highly customized tenor ukulele featuring hand-selected master-grade back and sides from our reserve stock of highly figured Hawaiian koa. The small top is master-grade red cedar. The tiny instrument boasts a master-class koa bind on the neck and body. When asked about the design choices and inlay, the customer explained, “The cedar and koa were chosen for power and complexity, the dandelion because it reflects the featherweight philosophy behind Breedlove ukes. My theme for this uke: floats like a dandelion, stings like a bee.” Red Cedar Top: Western red cedar is a wonderful wood for fingerstyle players. It is softer than spruce, so it requires a careful and accurate touch, and it rewards with sweet, extended harmonic content. Koa Back and Sides: One of the most visually stunning woods available, with golden hues...
