From namm.org Revival of traditional bluegrass and folk instruments fueling music retail as banjos, mandolins and other acoustic sounds permeate all musical genres Carlsbad, CA, May 7, 2013—A colorful, populist revival is underway for traditional bluegrass and folk instruments according to current sales trends and anecdotes from retailers. The hallmark instruments of this resurgent sound promise to be a dominant force at Summer NAMM, held July 11, 12 and 13 in Nashville at the brand new Music City Center. Growing demand is being fostered by steady stream of Top 10 tunes richly embroidered with bluegrass and folk sound via artists such as Taylor Swift, Mumford & Sons, and even Steve Martin. Featured Wood: Exotic Cocobolo
May 08, 2013 | News & Events
Cocobolo is a rosewood that grows in Central America that has striking orange and black variegations that age to deep reds and blacks. Some exceptional pieces such as the sets pictured also have a distinct golden sapwood. Cocobolo produces a clean, deep and resonant tone that is considered to be close to the tone of the Brazilian Rosewood used on classic prewar instruments. The sets pictured have been treated with a fast evaporating acetone to highlight the rich colors and grain of the wood and to mimic the coloration that will be seen once the guitar has finish applied to it. Gary Morris Rocks the Cocobolo Gary Morris is renowned for his powerful and unique voice in genres as distinct as country music and the Broadway stage. Apr 29, 2013 | News & Events
It takes a certain, quiet strength to work in the shadows, and an entirely different kind of fortitude to step into the light. Franchot Tone is blessed with all of the above. The Oregon-based singer/songwriter/producer isn't a household name, thanks to his decidedly behind-the-scenes work on some of the coolest musical projects to emerge from the West Coast in recent years. But his sound is unmistakable: take a pitch-perfect pinch of vintage reggae and dub, a sun-fried splash of laid-back SoCal pop-rock, and a heaping helping of Meters-style funk and soul, and you've got Tone's brew. It's a flavor he's added to a bunch of projects that didn't bear his name, choosing creativity and fulfillment over fame. Over the past several months, however, a solo path has revealed itself, illuminated at every turn by someone else. Now, Tone is stepping up to the front of the stage for the first time. It's a new role, but one he's tackling with confidence and a sense that it's one he's meant to play. More than ever,...
