Sisters Community Luthier Program

Sisters, OR is a modern, western community that honors its heritage. Sisters is known for its charming setting and involved community. One community venture is the Americana Project. This project is an innovative music and arts education program with broad community outreach. It is a collaboration between Sisters Folk Festival, Creative Educational Resources and the Sisters School District. These creative classes are offered at both Sisters Huigh and all of Sisters middle schools. The classes provide students opportunities for self-expression in music and visual arts, ability to learn how to play the guitar, write songs, perform, record and engineer their own music. Another program offered is the Community Luthier program, where students learn how to build custom guitars and ukuleles. The Community Luthier program started in 2005 by Tony Cosby, who teaches woodworking and engineering at Sisters High School. Breedlove’s Partnership with the Children’s Cancer Association

MyMusicRX, a program within the Children’s Cancer Association, is known as a “music medicine” site for kids and teens facing the battle of cancer and other serious illnesses. With their open arms this program welcomes kids to “feel” the music and gives them an opportunity to explore exclusive artist greetings, concerts, music lessons, digital instruments, and games. Recently MyMusicRX attended Newport Folk Fest 2015. At the festival MMRX caught up with a few Breedlove players. MyMusicRX meets up with the supporting artists backstage for a short “Song Prescription”. What is a Song Prescription one might ask? MyMusicRX will ask the supporting artist, “What song always makes you feel great?” The artist will respond with what songs have helped them through tough times, or their favorite artists or songs, or play one of their own songs that is close to their heart. Every May, guitar enthusiasts make their way out to Bend, OR for a quest to build the perfect guitar. These enthusiasts have chosen Breedlove Stringed Instruments as their guitar brand of choice. The participants get to attend the Breedlove Factory tour. They learn about the story of the handcrafted guitars and why the tonewoods are important to the sound they seek. Within the Custom Sound Studio, Breedlove offers a handcrafted sound and extended customization options. In this short film Chuck Johnson, a fine wood specialist, has lead this trip for almost 12 years. Chuck offers education to the group about the fine woods Breedlove has to offer to build instruments. The film follows the build process and the finished product. Not only can the participants walk away with a guitar, but they leave with longtime friends and an experience that lasts a lifetime. Unfortunately, this annual endeavor celebrated their last hoorah this past May. Chuck is planning to retire in July of this year, but will pursue his dream of playing his custom Breedlove...
