Crossover KO NT Mandolins
When Kim Breedlove began playing the mandolin, he could not help but ponder innovative designs for maximizing the tonal balance and unique mandolin sound and making it easier for a guitarist to play. The result is the collection of Breedlove Crossover Mandolins. Crafted from all solid woods: Sitka spruce tops and maple backs. The wider nut width (1-3/16”) and radius fretboard facilitate players moving back-and-forth among instruments. We are pleased to now offer the full complement of "O", “K” and “F” body shapes in both “O” and “F” sound holes. Kim Breedlove’s “F” body which brings the full volume and dynamic tone we would expect from a Breedlove mandolin while our “O” bodies create that direct response and articulation from a smaller body. For summer 2016 we now are able to offer the extremely balanced “K” body shape which allows the player access to those attributes that make our “O” and “F” body mandolins so popular.

The K series of Breedlove mandolins have become an instant classic. Through the mind and hands of Kim Breedlove, the traditional Florentine shape has been transformed into a more modern, less rounded version of itself.
Sitka spruce, picea sitchensis, originates in the northwest United States. Sitka spruce has been the primary top wood for American-made instruments for decades. It is strong and light with extended harmonic content, and it nearly equals the power of Adirondack. It offers a strong, focused tone with a solid fundamental -- perfect for flatpicking styles. When compared with European spruce, Sitka delivers warmer, more fundamental sound, largely free of overtones. Sitka takes a slightly longer period of playing time to open up. It has a straight uniform grain and coloration ranges from white to pink to light brown.
Band and Side Wood
Maple is great for standing out among other instruments. With a powerful fundamental and even harmonics, it is clear and present, but without pronounced peaks and valleys in the harmonic content.
Set-up in Bend, OR
Our comprehensive quality control process provides the player with an instrument that will play perfectly right out of the box. Prior to shipment, every Breedlove instrument undergoes a rigorous 25-to-30-point inspection in Bend, Oregon by our expert U.S. quality control team. We start with a visual inspection: checking aesthetic and structural elements of the body and components for flaws. Next, each guitar is tuned and undergoes a play test, where our craftspeople check nut height, relief, action, and string height. Based on the results of the play test, we then adjust for maximum playability. Finally, each instrument is buffed and polished by hand with painstaking attention to detail. Once the instrument has passed inspection, a signed QC sticker is placed, and the instrument is carefully packed and shipped.
