Wenge is powerful, bright, and clear, with great sustain, offering many of the best properties tonally. It is dense and stiff, but porous.

Origin: Central and West Africa
Tone Profile:Lots of sustain, strong upper mids, with an articulate attack. Tap tone rings like a piece of glass, plate of steel, or a crystal brandy snifter. It compares favorably to Brazilian rosewood.
Aesthetics: Very dark purplish-brown or chocolate-brown coloration, verging on black.
Trivia / Fact: Found in swampy areas in Cameroon and the Congo in East Africa, it has been used traditionally for ceremonial masks and statues.
