Exotic CM Classic E Guitars
Designed for fingerstyle virtuosos seeking an elaborate, expanded bass response, magnificent sustain and a distinctly modern silhouette. The Exotic CM Classic is the most balanced and tonally rich guitar Breedlove has crafted. The innovative asymmetrical body gives the lower energy bass notes more headroom, while shortening the body for the higher energy treble notes. Crafted with the Breedlove Bridge Truss, the result is incredible balance while delivering rich full music. Beautifully figured walnut back and sides are married to a Western red cedar top. The sharp cutaway facilitates easy access to the upper frets and lends an artful design to the instrument. The striking crimson bloodwood binding defines every angle, the linear fusion inlay adds interest to the ebony fretboard, and the abalone rosette shimmers whether on stage or in your living room. CM Body Shape
Designed in 1992, the CM put Breedlove on the map with unique design and distinctively crafted sound. Built on Breedlove’s Concert shape, with an asymmetrical twist, this innovative award-winning design captures the essence of Breedlove’s imaginative challenger mentality. No other guitar looks or sounds quite like it. The sonic imprint of the CM is uniquely full spectrum and immensely gratifying; the lower bout rewards the player with a generous, defined bass, while the abbreviated upper bout generates beautifully balanced and clear treble tones. The CM is excellent for alternate tunings and has been described as having piano-like qualities. If you wish to expand your sonic and aesthetic boundaries, the CM is an adventurous design that will deliver in spades.
Back and Side Wood
Walnut, claro and black, juglans hindii, and nigra, has a very even response curve. From the dramatic curly figure of claro walnut to the straight grain of black walnut, this tonewood offers a strong, clear fundamental, with clear harmonics. First discovered by the English Botanist Richard B. Hinds in the Sacramento Valley, it is the favorite wood of many luthiers, and has been described as "the mahogany of the rich." With tight lows, strong mids, and fat, even treble tones and lots of sustain, it is warm and earthy with the overtone depth of rosewood and the clarity of mahogany. Walnut is brighter than mahogany, but not quite as bright as maple. Coloration varies from black and orange contrasts to the usual chocolate walnut tones.
Western red cedar, thuja plicata, originates in western North America. Western red cedar is softer than spruce, so it requires a careful and accurate touch, but it rewards with sweet, extended harmonic content, making it a wonderful wood for fingerstyle players. A responsive tonewood, Western red cedar sounds broken-in, even when new and offers a balanced, rich tone, with projection, sustain, and harmonic complexity. It produces bright trebles, which give it a warmer, sweeter sound than the spruce. Coloration runs from light (almost as light as Sitka) to a very dark reddish-brown.
Breedlove graduated tops, featured on select models, contribute stunning balance from lows to highs. How? Graduated tops are slightly thicker on the treble side, balancing the higher energy treble frequencies with the lower energy bass frequencies traveling through the thinner bass side. The result: clearer, cleaner highs and stable, resonant lows. Because no two soundboards are exactly the same, Breedlove craftsmen evaluate each top for stiffness and density, and then graduate it accordingly. The amount of graduation is customized for each individual instrument. The top is sanded to the precise graduated thickness to achieve optimal flexibility and stiffness. This hands-on process is one of the major contributors to the Breedlove sound.
Breedlove Bridge Truss
The Breedlove Bridge Truss (BBT) reduces tension on the soundboard of the guitar, so the top wood is able to vibrate more freely, producing remarkable sustain, balance, and clarity. The BBT also allows for a thinner graduated top, thereby allowing Breedlove craftsmen to bring out the optimal sound from the top wood without sacrificing structural stability. Relieving much of the string tension from the bridge prevents “bridge belly,” ensuring top stability for decades. Guitar strings can exert up to 230 pounds of pull from the nut to the bridge. Traditional methods for preventing top bowing at the bridge usually involve heavy internal bracing and thicker tops. The BBT compensates for this pressure in an innovative way: The BBT is mounted to the bridge from the inside and is connected into the tail block of the guitar, pulling downward on the underside of the bridge to distribute some of the tension, relieving pressure on the top. The resulting tonal effect on BBT-equipped guitars is more resonance and livelier sound with enhanced overtones.
Breedlove guitars feature a slimmer neck profile, which enables comfortable play, even with smaller hands. Unlike traditional dovetail neck joints that require major surgery for a neck re-set, it is easy to adjust the play action and neck angle with the Breedlove bolt-on neck and single-action truss rod. The hand-rubbed, semi-gloss Breedlove neck finish contributes to ideal playability – the finish process alone takes three days, including precise finish coat applications, fine sanding, and hand buffing and rubbing.
Breedlove Asymmetrical Headstock
The asymmetrical headstock featured on CM, Concert, Auditorium, and 12-String body shapes isn’t just a pretty design – it’s specifically designed to keep the strings in a straight, even line from the nut to the tuning pegs. The result is even tension, stable tuning, and ease of alternate tuning.
