Exodus Guitar

When Kim Breedlove was tasked with creating an exquisite instrument to showcase the company’s expertise, he recalled a mass snake migration that he witnessed in his youth. To bring to life his vision of snakes emerging from hibernation, Kim first spent time exploring this idea on paper, working with pen and ink.

Kim cut his linear drawing into separate components with a razor and then glued each paper component to sections of shell. Using the ink as an outline, he finely cut each piece with a jeweler’s saw. The shell snakes were inlaid into the figured ebony fingerboard using an assortment of pearl and abalone shell, further detailed with red, green and orange pinstripes. Once in place, Kim hand-etched the stunning inlay to further enhance the detail of the design.

The unique rosette features iridescent snakes emerging from the soundhole, breaking out beyond the traditional rosette boundary. To achieve this effect, Kim first inlaid the snakeheads and bodies into a piece of ebony, and then inlaid the assembly into the koa top, allowing the emerging snakes to flow into and over the detailed purfling rings of the rosette.

The body, neck and headstock of the Exodus guitar are bound with ebony, bordered with black pearl and flanked by purflings of abalone and dyed wood veneer.

Jane Goodall / Grey Beard Custom Guitar

This magnificently crafted C25 Master Class custom guitar was inspired by Jane Goodall and Gombe Stream in western Tanzania, the birthplace of the foundation and Goodall’s inspirational work. This unique guitar features a beautiful bear claw Sitka spruce top and figured sapele back and sides from Kim Breedlove’s personal collection. The rosette is as stunning as it is unique, featuring a solid snakewood ring and custom African design. This masterpiece is finished with a figured sapele neck, master-class headstock with snakewood overlay, a master-class snakewood fingerboard with an ebony bind, abalone top purfling, master-class ebony binding, snakewood winged bridge, bone nut and saddle, and deluxe high gloss finish.

Sitka spruce is grown in the northwest, and has been the primary top wood for U.S.A. instruments for many decades. It is strong, light, and gives an extended harmonic content and nearly equals the power of Adirondack.

Sapele is similar both visually and tonally to dense mahogany, but both darker and harder, giving it a strong visual presence and a bit more upper harmonic content and low-end clarity. It’s a good choice for many sizes and shapes, and works well for strumming and fingerstyle.

Custom Myrtlewood CM

Le Musicien, Breedlove’s distribution partner in France, commissioned this one-of-a-kind Private Reserve guitar. This extraordinary musical instrument was made with Sitka spruce, figured myrtlewood, Oregon walnut, African ebony, Honduran mahogany, Baltic birch and Spanish cedar. All parts were aged together before assembly of the guitar. The myrtlewood was carefully inspected and two back-to-back pieces were splayed out like an open book to reveal a mirror image of the wood grain, color and figure. Each piece of wood was matched to this set for quality, tone, beauty, contrast and scent. C’est bon!
