With so many advancements in new recording technologies, it's easier than every for artists around the world to create and publish their creations from just about anywhere, with surprisingly simplistic audio setups. In this blog post, we look at two talented artists and their DIY workflow and setup that's yielding great sounding, and viewership, results.
Q. How long have you guys been playing together?
We have been playing together all throughout college where we met about seven years ago! We auditioned to be on a touring music group, both made it and became friends through that process.
Q. Where did you guys get your start in music?
We always loved music and wanted to post videos singing together but never had the time. We just started a FaceBook page a few months ago, and that’s when we began posting our videos. All of our family and friends started sharing, then all of their friends started sharing them too. They are getting great viewership.
Q. Your new video for Blameless / Forever is simplistically creative and well performed/produced. You keep the arrangement minimal with the equipment but get impressive results. What's the gear setup look like and how do you like to use technology like this to get solid production value out of a minimalistic arrangement of instruments?
Thanks so much! We haven’t had any experience in music software until we started watching tutorials on YouTube. Within a month of learning, we started putting videos out, they still aren’t anywhere close to correct audio mixing, but we just love to sing and have fun! We use a Mini MPK2 for most of the instruments and my trusty Breedlove Guitar for some nice acoustic sounds. On the gear / tec side, we record instruments and vocals beforehand using Logic Pro X on a MacBook Pro using a focusrite audio interfac and I track using a studio condenser mic. Once the audio is done, we record video and match it all together in post using Final Cut Pro. It takes a lot of work, but we love the results!
Q. How do you guys go about putting together compositions stylistically? What does the creative process look like?
The process is usually on the whim; we take a week to think about what we would like to do and go through different sounds to see what we like. Music is such an awesome venue to create and have fun, even if no one listened to our music, we would just enjoy spending the time and process of working together and putting out what we think sounds good to us
Q. What are you guys working on now or next? What's on the horizon?
We have a couple of sweet medleys and music videos in store! We just plan to have fun and create together, it becomes work when you lose the joy of having fun, and we hope to never get to that point. Thank you for watching!
