Staying true to the dark and complex themes on his upcoming 4-part series GOD LOVE AND DEATH, Steven Dunn is back with the gloomy video for his new single “Til Rocks Cry Out”.
About the video Dunn comments:
“We shot the video exclusively on a single iPhone as an exercise in reduction. I wanted it to match the simplicity of the song while also showcasing the ability for independent artists to be able to furnish professional work on a budget.”
Songwriter, musician and singer Steven Dunn is releasing a 4-part EP Series throughout 2018. The first volume, “GOD” was released on May 1, “LOVE” will be out on June 30, “AND” out on July 30 and “DEATH” out on October 31.
Everyone has a story to tell, artist Dunn catalogs his with honest emotions, roots rock riffs, Americana flavor, folkie fusion and a touch of Delta Blues. With intimate and intricate music, he first solidified himself as a fixture around Indiana University’s indie rock scene early on in his career. Following his debut album, Indianola, Dunn started work on his four-part series inspired by the legendary Johnny Cash.
“As a kid, driving in the car with my Dad, we listened to gospel or bluegrass, with few exceptions of classic country, namely Johnny Cash. Listening to Cash’s music felt like getting away with something between his prison-based anthems and handful of curse words. His music was captivating, and I latched onto his story telling at an early age. I remembered reading once that Johnny said he only wrote about God, love, and death and when asked why his “outlaw” songs sold the most, he said something to the extent of “there’s a bit of criminal in all of us.” As I was songwriting one day, I got the idea to write the themed series of God, Love, And, and Death. I wanted to explore ideas like morality, faith, and doubt while paying homage to one of my favorite writers.” Explained Steven
With soulful lyrics and raw, haunting vocals, “GOD LOVE AND DEATH” has a pointed realism that is meant to bring attention to the fleeting lives we lead and our inability to rationalize different aspects of emotions throughout various stages of it. GOD is the first in a four-part record series recorded live over a two-day span. The series doesn’t hinge on just one song, but instead uses every song across the board to captivate the listener by taking them on a journey.
Vocally Dunn possesses a wide spectrum of range and a variety of tone. He uses these aspects to add vivid and dramatic effect to enhance the mood and movement of the stories in his songs. The authentic vocal commitment and scope of the stories he tells brings the listener out of the mundane and into a new world full of thought and possibility.
Dunn has been featured on radio, television, and live performances across the United States and Europe; embarking on his first international tour in the Autumn of 2017.
