At Breedlove, our craftsmen create a wide variety of very unique, creative and impressive custom instruments. The handcrafted custom ukuleles, in particular, are both visual and sonically stunning. We just completed this highly customized tenor ukulele featuring hand-selected master-grade back and sides from our reserve stock of highly figured Hawaiian koa. The small top is master-grade red cedar. The tiny instrument boasts a master-class koa bind on the neck and body. When asked about the design choices and inlay, the customer explained, “The cedar and koa were chosen for power and complexity, the dandelion because it reflects the featherweight philosophy behind Breedlove ukes. My theme for this uke: floats like a dandelion, stings like a bee.”
Red Cedar Top: Western red cedar is a wonderful wood for fingerstyle players. It is softer than spruce, so it requires a careful and accurate touch, and it rewards with sweet, extended harmonic content.
Koa Back and Sides: One of the most visually stunning woods available, with golden hues and often with dramatic figure. Koa is characterized by a tone that is both clear and sweet. The voice grows over time, from sweet to sweeter.
