Owner Brett Mulzer shared some of his thoughts about acoustic guitars and Breedlove with us.

How long have you been a Distinctive Dealer?
We were one of, if not, the first Distinctive Dealer when Breedlove first started the program over two year ago.  It was a no brainier to join the program because of the amazing American made guitars they offer and the options of custom built guitars.  The wood selection at the factory in Bend is second to none.

What is your favorite Breedlove?
My personal favorite is my Custom C25 Concert with Retirement Koa back and sides and very old Sinker Redwood for the top.  It has crazy good tone. I personally picked the woods out with Tom Bedell and the Custom Team at the factory…we tried something new and it was a hit.  My favorite production model Breedlove is the Exotic Fingerstylist.  It is absolutely stunning to look at but it has a playability and tone to die for.  The one we have in stock now is my favorite guitar in our whole shop.

What is your favorite wood combination?
My favorite wood combination is Brazilian Rosewood back and sides paired with either a European Spruce top or an Adirondack spruce top.  There are so many combinations, it is fun to experiment.

Why do you think Koa is such a great tonewood?
Koa is a somewhat complex tonewood because it tends to have the characteristics of mahogany and brighter tonewoods.  It is very cool for fingerstyle guitarists because it tends to be a little brighter and “cleaner” sounding because of the de-emphasis of the low end.  A lot of people that have Koa guitars say the low-to-mid range opens up significantly over time so it is a tough tonewood to wrap your brain and ears around when you first grab it.  I always tell people that if you think it sounds good now, wait a year or so…it won't get dark and muddy, but the frequency range will open up and continue to amaze you!  One thing I have always wanted to do was pair the Koa back & sides with a different top…as most manufacturers tend to make the whole guitar Koa. My custom Breedlove has Koa back & sides paired with Redwood on top and it balances out so well, I play it all the time! Just as Hawai'i is beautiful, Koa is such a draw of the eye in a guitar showroom.

Best tip for deciding on what guitar to purchase?
When you are looking for a guitar, there are a lot of considerations.  First, you should find a body size that fits your stature so it is comfortable to play. If you have a guitar that is too big or too small, you're likely going to play it less because it's uncomfortable.  Then do your research on tonewoods and call a shop that knows their stuff to get some advice.  If you're shopping online, try to find a shop that has high-quality audio samples, throw on some good headphones and listen closely.  If you have a good local shop, go down there and try a bunch out!  That's what it's all about!  Have some fun, finding your new guitar should be almost as fun as playing it after you get it home!

What is your favorite part to customize on a guitar?
Most people will say inlays on the fretboard, but for some reason I love trying new purflings and bindings.  Pairing those with a beautiful rosette and maybe a stripe down the back of the body is my favorite part of building a custom. Headstock decoration is fun as well; it can really tie the whole guitar together if it's done right.
