Since its inception in 2018, the Portland Folk Festival has grown from a humble gathering of musicians into one of the city’s most beloved music events. This January 17th and 18th, the festival returns to its iconic home at McMenamins Crystal Ballroom, offering two days of live music, local artistry, and community connection. Headlined by acts like the Rainbow Girls, Olive Klug, Handmade Moments, and Thunderstorm Artis, this year’s event promises to celebrate the diverse and evolving spirit of folk music.
A Historic Venue for a Timeless Genre
The Crystal Ballroom is the perfect venue for the festival, combining Portland’s rich cultural history with an intimate, vintage charm. As festival organizer Scott Gilmore notes, “The walls have maintained all those vibes from over the years, and we’re happy to add our own artistic energy to that collective spirit.” With its historic ambiance and unique energy, the Crystal Ballroom creates a fitting backdrop for folk musicians to share their stories and songs.
What is Portland Folk?
Folk music has always been about storytelling and community. As Scott explains, “Our definition of folk isn’t based on instruments but on ideas. Folk represents communication and the passing down of information from one generation to the next. It’s more about the energy and the message than adhering to a strict genre.”
This philosophy is reflected in the festival’s genre-diverse lineup, featuring everything from traditional acoustic performances to Americana, indie, and even spoken word. This year, a second stage in Lola’s Room will host stripped-down acoustic sets, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
More Than Music
The Portland Folk Festival goes beyond music to foster community and give back. This year, proceeds will benefit Sunstone Way, a nonprofit dedicated to serving Portland’s houseless population. Festival-goers can support this cause by purchasing raffle tickets or donating warm clothing in exchange for entries. Among the raffle prizes is a stunning Breedlove Organic Pro guitar, an instrument crafted with the same care and artistry that defines the festival itself.
The festival will also feature local craft vendors, creating a vibrant marketplace atmosphere. Additionally, attendees can enjoy live art by Pop Wonder, a local digital artist who will be creating a unique piece during the event.
