The Black Ram Guitar: Can One Guitar Save a Forest?

Nestled within the remote wilderness of Montana’s Yaak Valley lies an ancient forest home to some of the oldest and most ecologically significant trees in North America. This old-growth forest, with trees dating back over 600 years, provides refuge to endangered species like grizzly bears and plays a critical role in carbon sequestration. However, the tranquility and biodiversity of this sacred ecosystem are under threat from the proposed Black Ram timber sale, which would see thousands of acres logged, putting both the forest and its wildlife at great risk.

In a bid to protect this irreplaceable wilderness, Breedlove Guitars has partnered with conservationist and writer Rick Bass, actor and activist Jeff Bridges, and a host of scientists, artists, and musicians. Together, we’ve launched the All in This Together guitar—a tribute to the forest and a tool for amplifying its voice in the fight for preservation.

This one-of-a-kind guitar, crafted from a 315-year-old spruce that fell in the Black Ram forest, is more than an instrument; it is a symbol of the urgent need to protect our forests. It is currently on tour, serving as an ambassador for the Black Ram conservation effort.

The tour recently kicked off with an impressive, sold-out show in Missoula, Montana, on the weekend of September 28. The event brought together musicians, writers, and environmental advocates in a powerful stand for the forest. Next, the guitar will be featured at a lecture and film screening at the University of Wyoming, continuing its journey in the hands of creatives dedicated to the cause.

The topic was brilliantly covered in a recent article In Montana, a Threatened Swath of Old Growth Fuels a Longstanding Debate by Outside Magazine.
