Sustainable & Clear Cut Free
Made from sustainably-sourced exotic and native tonewoods. No clear-cut trees are used in these instruments. Breedlove uses salvaged and individually harvested timber and has deep relationships with responsible suppliers around the globe. As we move towards sustainability across all lines, owner Tom Bedell has visited 15 countries to discover exactly where the wood comes from, how it is selected and harvested, and how this affects the wildlife, the community, the forest and the planet.

The Companion Body Shape

Historically, serious guitar players on-the-move have faced a rather tough dilemma; contend with the challenges of traveling with a full-size guitar or settle for a more convenient, smaller instrument with traditionally reduced sound quality… the travel guitar.

Koa Top, Back & Sides

One of the most visually stunning woods available, with golden hues and often with dramatic figure. Koa is characterized by a tone that is both clear and sweet. The voice grows over time, from sweet to sweeter. Clear and sweet. The wood “opens up” the more the instrument is played, expanding the midrange, for an even richer, sweeter tone over time. Due to its popularity, it is harder and harder to find top-quality koa. Limited supply has driven up prices in recent years, making koa expensive, and therefore rarely found in production guitars. Has the stiffness and clarity of rosewood, but with the warm, light tones of mahogany. Similar in weight and strength to black walnut. Colors range from brown to gold, with rich and varying grain, tending toward curl or flame figure in old-growth trees. Koa is a fast-growing tropical hardwood, native to the Hawaiian Islands. It requires up to 200 inches of annual rainfall. As a nitrogen fixing plant, it is perfect for growing in the young volcanic soil of the Islands

In addition to its dimensions, we have listed every piece of solid wood used in this model, giving its common name, scientific name and country of origin. We use no clear-cut wood. We salvage fallen timber or individually harvest trees to minimize impact on the forest. You can travel worry free with your Made in Bend Breedlove—no permits are needed. Still, if you plan on trekking internationally, we suggest printing this information and carrying it with your guitar to avoid misunderstandings or prolonged waits with customs officials.
