Clear Cut Free
Overview
Go stand in the forest. Seriously. Do it. Walk way out into the woods. You’ll know when you find the right spot. When you do, stop, close your eyes, and stand silently. Let it sink in. Smell the air—that hint of resin, the loamy undergrowth, the sweet tinge of the breeze off a nearby lake. Listen, too, to the way that same zephyr tickles the leaves, shivers the branches and just occasionally whistles by, making nature’s music. Finally, open your eyes. Look. The light, the shade, the colors—the rich, pure bounty of the land. Now, in a flash, imagine it all gone. The same sylvan scene, but barren, stricken of life, stripped of wonder, blank. That is the horror of commercial clear-cutting—the belching smoke of the engine, the whir of the blade and the absolute devastation of a habitat. For what? Paper, furniture? Centuries old forests around the globe have been felled in what the planet might consider less than the blink of an eye. Breedlove uses no clear-cut wood in any of its Made in Bend or Organic Collection models and is working with purveyors and partners to establish sustainable, individual harvest practices across the industry.
